I love to see an adult take the opportunity to mentor a child and especially a child growing up in the US who doesn't even have the semblance of a childhood as I would imagine all kids having. For example, who imagines a 12 yr old who doesn't understand the concept of breakfast, lunch and dinner?! We should all be inspired to do what we can.

This was the sweetest story about an unlikely friendship. It’s a quick read, but very impactful and uplifting. A good reminder to never underestimate the impact a small act of kindness can have on someone in need.

A phenomenal story along the lines of The Blind Side that tells of a very unusual friendship that almost didn't happen. Laura Schroff was heading to lunch one day and passed a young boy named Maurice asking for money on the streets. She passed by without thinking, then stopped in the middle of an intersection and went back and bought him lunch. That began a friendship that changed both of their lives.

The story alternates with the back stories of both Laura and Maurice, showing how both came from broken homes of different types. This helps show that the friendship was not one of privilege versus poverty, but of a true equal nature. As inadequate as the reader might feel about Maurice's mother, Laura is careful not to replace her. Instead, Laura becomes a role model to Maurice. Showing him hope, a way out and giving him a place to escape from his home life.

The real message of the book is how one person can make a difference in another person's life, and how important it is to find that invisible thread that binds us to each other.

I really did not know what to expect with this book. It was a quick read. I enjoyed it and cried a few times. There are a few things that left me wondering, what did she do with her big jar of money and what became of Maurice's sisters.

This book was a little "white saviorism" for me, and I most appreciated the author's reflection on how she benefitted from the relationship with the boy, rather than her impact.

Special

I really loved this book! It was so simple and so sweet. You have a chance to touch a life with every person you meet. Always remember that.

I appreciated the story this book tell. It is definitely a product of the time it was written and although it attempts not to at times it has patronizing undertones. I appreciated the story and the idea that making a decision to see what the world chooses to ignore can have lasting and life changing consequences. I think as a society we need to see people more as people and less as a bother.
