Update: Okay so I forgot to post the review on here. But I really enjoyed this book. It was a cute read.
I love the premise that there is an invisible thread which connects us to others. I felt the story of Laura and Maurice's friendship had so much potential, but unfortunately didn't have the "heart" I was hoping it would have. Young, well-to-do, successful, white woman befriends 12 year old, project living, struggling to find his next meal, black boy in a snapshot is the basis of this book. This is both a biography and an auto-biography and therein lies part of the problem. Laura's upbringing certainly was not ideal, but I would have preferred for the book to be more focused on the relationship between Laura and Maurice, versus her own childhood and trying to relate that to Maurice's situation. I imagine the author's intent was to help the reader see that she too did not have an ideal upbringing, but unfortunately it just distracted from a wonderful story. Laura did what many in our world do not; she cared about another human being. Was she faultless in her caring? No. Did she let Maurice down at times (like choosing her selfish husband's desires over what was best for Maurice)? Yes. But, still she did more than most people would and made a positive impact on Maurice's life. There were moments in the book that brought me to tears, and Laura did write well enough for me to fall in love with her sweet Maurice. I just wish she would have focused more on the tender moments the two of them shared. As another reviewer stated, "More showing and less telling." Maurice, as Laura does state time and again, is certainly the "hero" and a remarkable person of character.

The part of the story that is actually about Laura's relationship with Maurice is sweet and touching; however, too much of the book became all about Laura. Maurice does sound like he is a special person who was able to rise about his life circumstances and Laura played a major role by mentoring him.
Great story of a connection between a street boy and a business woman. Inspiring!
This is by far the most beautiful book ive ever read. I cried several times, but it was so worth it. This book makes you apreciate life.
A very touching tale... In a world where the news tends to be so negative. In a world where people make excuses or blame others for their down spiral ... It's nice to see how one person can make an positive impact. Not thru judgement or constant preaching... But by teaching/ providing real life experiences. If you are not moved by this tale...
I wish goodreads would implement a half star system. This was just a 2.5 star story for me. It seemed a little self absorbed and I felt like I heard the same story line several times. The timeline was also jumpy without much cause as to why. I am not sure that I would recommend this boom to others.
