kristin hannah…you have done it again. a beautiful novel honoring the women who served in the vietnam war, and one that is both heart wrenching and inspiring. this book made me cry several times and filled me with so much hope. such a gorgeously written must-read. 5/5 stars <3

I liked the first half a lot. The ending was pretty good. But the middle dragged so bad. The whole thing with Rye was so frustrating, I couldn’t understand why she loved him. With all the men, actually. It seemed like every man on earth was overcome with lust for her. And, I know the author was trying to make this accurate to the time, but it seemed like Frankie had every possible bad thing happen to her that you could conceive of. It stopped being believable after a certain point.

The language is very easy and flat which brings my score down. Story wise I felt frustrated through most of it, but it was definitely intended from the author's side. I started out feeling that it was just another young adult book, but it grew on me and I was positively surprised.

i was hoping for something different with this one, somehow. Well written and good story telling, but dark and stomach turning at times.  wouldn't be surprised if this one has a long list of content warnings.

When Frankie McGrath's older brother joins the military and is shipped out to war, she opts to follow in his stead.
Vietnam was crazy in 1966. War ensues, and both sides die, but it's even scarier for Frankie as an army nurse. Over there, she finds herself.

But when her time ends and Frankie returns home, things turn. She's met with hostility. Trying to find her way as a civilian is tough. Frankie experiences love and loss all while battling her own inner demons.

Trigger warning:
Suicidal ideation
War
Depression and PTSD
Infertility
Pregnancy

I was captivated the entire time. This book is SO GOOD! The author really lets you experience all of the emotions right alongside the character and addresses mental health issues and infertility in a way that is tastefully done. As someone who has ptsd from trauma, I think she did a really good job of describing it.

This book had me a blubbering mess but in the best ways. I love that this story highlights the amazing women that served during the Vietnam war and the struggles that they, and all veterans, faced when they came home. Part of me really wanted this to be based on a true story so we could find out what came for Frankie, Barb, Ethel, Jamie, Rhy and Henry. I loved everything about this book!

This book is incredibly written. The war passages are so powerful and hit so hard that I had to put the book down sometimes. It was a book that sticks with you, which is why I couldn’t bring myself to give it only three stars. Hannah is too amazing a writer for that.

However, there is a lot in the second half that made me feel like I was just pushing through to finish. Maybe that was the point, since Frankie is also trying to just push through life and survive, but that’s a feeling I don’t really want to experience in a book alongside the character. There were a few too many dramatic “twists” for me to find it enjoyable, and at points it even felt like it was unbelievable just how much was going wrong beyond Frankie’s control. Yes, I know that that is sometimes how things are in real life, but that doesn’t always translate to a well done story. I was tired of all the pain by the end, which again, I was maybe supposed to be feeling alongside Frankie, but isn’t something I necessarily want to be feeling when reading a book.

The ending was strong though and I did deeply love the friendship between Frankie, Ethel, and Barb. I liked seeing how differently their lives played out and wished there had been more focus on that then on all the romantic dramas. I liked seeing them come together repeatedly to support one another and I’m glad that was the ultimate point and focus of the book. It also had amazing commentary on the war itself, in the politics and the complexity of the situation both in-country and in the US.

Overall, I don’t regret reading this, and I would definitely recommend it to others.
