- Frankie’s privilege made it hard to fully connect with her struggles. Her wealthy parents constantly bailed her out—buying her a house, paying off her DUI—so the stakes never felt that high.
- It seemed like every man in Vietnam was falling in love with her, which got repetitive fast. Was it because she was one of the few American women there? Maybe. But it made the story feel unrealistic.
- The whole Henry situation was frustrating. He’s a psychologist—how did he not realize how deeply unwell Frankie was when they first got together? And his involvement in her inpatient treatment years later? Yikes.
- The Rye storyline. Even though she knew he was a liar, she trusted him over and over. She projected her needs onto him, which unfortunately is something a lot of relationships struggle with. Love is such a complex topic, and I think Kristin Hannah absolutely nailed this dymanic.
- The female friendships were a highlight. Despite everything, the support and camaraderie between the women carried the novel.
- The author's notes were facinating: I super appreciate the amount of reasearh Kristin Hannah does when writing her books. I never held any opinions about the war in Vietnam, but learned so much from this book. I was motivated to learn more about the Tet Offensive and other major battles that I had forgotten about since school. I love this about historical fiction novels.
