Read it for a book club, which is why this isn’t my typical type of book, but found it enjoyable. The only flaw for me was the drawn out writing to get to a point then moved too quickly away from it. However, it was a great read about a complex piece of history with lots of moving parts and plot twists!

It took me a while to get into, then it was really good, then it was only okay again, then it was really emotional, then it dragged a little too long, but the ending was worth the last hour of the audiobook.

I found the book a little hard to get into, but I was interested in the story and stuck with it. The first "romance" story line was not overly compelling for me, but the main character's arc is both expected and unexpected. Overall, it's a well-written retelling of a difficult period in history, with flawed characters stumbling through a world full of contradictions. The very real lack of compassion for returning soldiers shows the depth and lasting impact of a nation that didn't welcome their soldiers home.
