There is something eerily beautiful about a book that draws you in and teaches you about known histories in another light. While a work of fiction, it covered a tumultuous and incredibly intense segment of history. It was done in an amazing way.

Best historical I’ve read in a long time

This griping novel does not hold back. The novel follows a young woman, Frankie, who volunteers to go to Vietnam as a nurse. Frankie quickly realizes she's in over her head but finds her way through harrowing experiences. Complicated family dynamics, PDST, and an angry country await Frankie on her return home.

While there are romantic relationships, which I was invested in, I appreciate that they're not the main narrative. I love the bonds of female friendships and was furious at the refusal of others to help women who put their lives at risk to help soldiers. I want to read first hand accounts and appreciated the resources the author provided in her acknowledgments.

The narrative arc is well structured, though I was most engaged with the time in country.

Highly suggest this read.

the romance in this book was the killer of the 5 stars.

rye is the WORST. justice for henry. and why TF is jamie alive??? be so serious

i loved barb oh so much and she was the best character in the book for me.

i felt like poor frankie could not catch a break, which kind of got old! nothing in her favor at all even after all she suffers through.

the work that frankie was doing at the end of the book was awesome and i’m glad that the author had her there rather just back at the hospital.

overall, incredible book that i know i will be thinking about for years

I generally really enjoy this author and books of this type (long sagas with difficult characters and themes). For this one, the plot was there for me but the writing was not. It felt very flat at times which made it difficult to really get into the content. The nonstop tragedy doesn't leave much room to breathe and sit with the emotions. I considered not finishing it during the first 30% or so, but I don't regret pushing through that. Worth reading but fell short of the potential, in my opinion

Since I read it in a week, I definitely enjoyed it; just had to take a break after reading part one since it’s pretty rough. I would have picked a different title. Something like “We Were There” would have been more eye catching. “The Women” just sounds plain; but maybe that was intended by marketing.
