This was a very well done look at poverty and addiction as it relates to one particular family and their struggles in Glasgow, Scotland. My heart went out to the ever optimistic Shuggie as his family heaved under the weight of his mother’s alcoholism. This book pulls back the covers and gives you a gritty, bleak look, but it also managed to have moments of humor and hope sprinkled in as well. The Bains felt very real and believable so much so that this often felt like a memoir.

Honestly it was just way too sad for me. Also had, like, every trigger in the book. Is this the new A Little Life?

I found this book really hard to get into, and i tried to continue with it even when i thought about giving up on it but once shuggies wife moved and he left her i gave up as i really wanted a happy ending for her and her children. Glasgow is a tough city to grow up in if you live in the 'wrong' part
