I have such mixed feelings about The Glutton. The prose in this book is gorgeous and vividly descriptive, but its subject matter made me so uncomfortable in a way that no book never has. The way the author describes Tarare’s ever-present, all-consuming hunger is so unsettling that although I felt compelled to finish the book, I felt relieved when I was done. There are some really gross graphic eating scenes that are definitely not for the faint of heart. If body horror is your thing, you’ll love this book.

It’s rare to find a beautiful book and rare to find a horrid book, but to find both in one is the rarest thing indeed. This book was a heart-wrenching page turner that humanized one of histories most notorious figures of folklore, and made me wonder at the things humans are capable of doing to each other. And the lengths we are willing to go to just to find a place we belong.

Beautifully written, if a bit meandering at times. I found the first half stronger than the conclusion, but still well worth it. My complete lack of knowledge about French history and geography let me down in parts, but that's hardly Blakemore's fault.

well. that was interesting.

overly pretentious and a little nonsensical but i guess i was kinda into it?
i mainly kept reading out of interest in the ideas of the story, not necessarily because i was particularly enthused with the book itself. it was good enough to finish and i might be thinking about it for a bit but like. it’s just okay at best

having no quotation marks does not make you more literary fyi it’s just annoying asf.
