The Freezing Season was a very tense and chilling story about a young woman who crosses the path of a very disturbing killer while driving through a snowy, isolated area.
This was a really suspenseful story with a clever supernatural surprise at the end. Some of the writing could have been condensed (Ashley trying to work out how to drive a stick shift drove me crazy), but the author was great at creating atmospheric horror scenes that really gripped you. He created some really evil and insane characters, but they were totally believable, which made the plot pretty scary.
The audio book narrator started off very well and really pulled me into the story. However, as the narration progressed, there was a certain monotony in the way each sentence was read, with the same inflection and speed. I am not sure whether it was an attempt to express the tension of the plot, but particularly during Ashley's second escape I started wishing I was reading the print version. The narrator sounded as if she was trying to rush through the story. On the other hand, I was immensely impressed by the voice she used for portraying the children. That was very well done. I also liked the way some sound effects were included. Sometimes that's very distracting, but it worked really well here. So, a bit of a mixed bag.
