After years of people telling me to read a Brandon Sanderson book and the whole Kickstarter fiasco, I have finally got around to it. Thus this is my first book ever by Sanderson; I don't know how this book score could change based on the rest of the series or the rest of the Cosmere. (yet) My overall feeling is mixed. It was a good read, and I did relate to the main character, Vin. Most of my problems are just nitpicks and my preferences for faster, more romantic, and shorter stories. However, the plot suffers from a very repetitive and slow style that can really be insufferable.
Vin is practically illiterate, as are most skaa, and it comes off quirky? Especially with Vin and Spook, and that rubs me wrong. The whole free will theme and religious tones are huge turnoffs. (apparently, Sanderson is a Mormon) Vin's mentor Kelsior is supposed to be charming, but he's not. He got worse as the story goes. Maybe I'm biased tho? Every mentor, grandfather/or father figure in media tends to be manipulative.
his fight dragged on way too long. When Vin and Elend showed up, I thought it would finally end, but nope it dragged some more.
I am more invested in all the other characters. Which there are too many. I kept going back and forth on if I liked Sazed but I think I warmed up to him.
What made me want to read this book was the idea that the prophetic hero fails and the evil rules, but that's all in the background. The bad guy won centuries ago! We slowly get the hero's journal, but the story would be the same without it. (shorter at least) The better description is a magical heist with politics and slavery thrown in. I enjoyed the romance and sexual tension, but I don't think he met latter.
even tho there are not many interactions between Elend and Vin or Spook. The sexual tension I meant with Ham and Bree. Perhaps he realized that in the editing phase, and that's why towards the end, they make Ham have an off-scene wife and kids he hasn't seen in months. :(
The world-building is the best part of the book. For example, the different ways metal and magic interact, the flying by dropping coins, and people looking like hellraisers walking around. The last 20% is fantastic.

A fun heist story with really excellent worldbuilding! Allomancy is such an interesting magic system that was so fun to learn about. It definitely moved a little slow due to so much worldbuilding and learning about all of the characters, but it was kept interesting with plot twists, humor, and great storytelling. Can't wait to dive into the rest of the trilogy!

Oh my god! I'm so happy I finally got around to reading this. It took me forever, but it was definitely worth it. This review goes out to my friend who is a massive Sanderson fan and finally convinced me to read this.

UMM... I don't have wordssssss for the ending of this book. THe entire 5th part was a masterpiece. I'm mad at how good it was. I'm still screaming honestly.

There was a chunk of the middle that was kinda a slog, but that might have been my mindspace? I wasn't really in a good place while I was reading that. That part is why I'm not sure about my 5 star rating, but I feel like a reread would definitely confirm the book as 5 stars.

Possibly my favorite part of the book were the little interludes from the logbook before every chapter. I'm going to be thinking about those for a LONG time.

SAZE my love <3 you are my favorite character I love you so much. I just felt the need to put that in. I love that man. (Most of the characters were great. Obviously I love Vin and Elend too. And Dox and Ham and Marsh. I think you get it.)

The more I write the more I feel good about a 5 star rating. Jesus this book was amazing.

I really liked the magic system in this book and the mythos of the world really drew me in. It would make a fantastic animated series. I did find some of the narration through inner monologue repetitive and odd at times and the romance didn't really seem earned.

This was such a good book.  I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did.  A lot of fantasy books are hit or miss with me, but this one was so good!!  It was detailed but not overwhelming to read.  It had a fast paced, but detailed plot, amazing world building, lovable characters, a good magical system, and lots of plot twists.  I got a little confused with remembering characters names at the beginning but that’s kinda expected with me.  I really enjoyed all the twists and turns nearing the end.  I am definitely continuing this series.
