an incredibly ambitious book that I think loosely achieves what it set out to do. I definitely finished the second half and wanted to reread the first half again, but also I didn’t feel like I enjoyed the actual experience of reading either half. The main narrators have really strong voices but I felt like that detracted from the plot of the book a little bit, and I struggled to follow what was actually going on. And I think that was intentional, but it wasn’t for me.

This book is one of those Why-I-Read books, by a writer with an unabashed joyfulness in his language, who challenges you to understand a time traveling story through the eyes of an adolescent Black boy. There are times when it soars and times when it rambles but by the end I loved these characters and their pain and love for each other.
It’s not an easy read. At times it’s thrilling and at times it drags and if you are a literal person you’ll say “huh” a lot but if you can roll with the story it’s worth the time. It’s two books in one, and I guess you could say it’s about a kid named City who finds a time portal to 1985 and 1964 and messes with his past and future. But that’s the easy part and if I say any more I’ll ruin it for you.
