5 stars. No notes. You know when you get so lost in the pages of a book that you forget you're reading? That was my experience reading Favorite Daughter.
The premise alone drew me to the book—two half-sisters who unknowingly reunite due to their father's will—but the execution was incredible. The pacing, the honest portrayal of alcoholism, the dynamics between the characters... perfection. And it's a debut novel! I can't wait to read what Morgan Dick reads next.
CW: alcoholism, death of a parent, child neglect, suicide, cancer, infidelity

Fun unrealistic plot about two equally dysfunctional halfsisters (unwittingly) getting to know each other. In tone it sometimes feels like a romcom - that is, a platonic one about sisters - but for large pieces of the story, it is also quite heavy, full of dark thoughts and bad choices (Rybka! ). That contrast was slightly too big for me at times - but it may not have helped that this was my second book in a row where alcoholism was so big a theme.
I appreciated how each sister had to nuance their ideas about the world and themselves after learning from the other, and how the author explored where a person ends versus where it’s actually symptoms of their mental issues talking and acting. Took a while to wrap up (which may have been a more realistic aspect of the plot actually).
