You know when it’s about family, it’s bound to be messy, complicated and downright heart-wrenching. I thoroughly enjoyed following Mickey’s journey—I liked her before I even knew the full extent of her story and that didn’t change as the plot unfolded. The author’s choices were interesting and I liked how they further cemented how broken these characters are. I came to really like Arlo too and I am more than satisfied with how it ended.

Mickey is a mess, estranged from both her parents when she learns, via the obituary, that her dad dies. After her dad left her and her mom, Deborah and Mickey were left to clean up his financial mess. Her dad’s lawyer appears to her one day and the kindergarten teacher learns that in order to inherit her dad’s money, Mickey must attend 7 counseling sessions, with Arlo. A great story unfolds in this well written novel. I thoroughly enjoyed how the characters grew from beginning to end. Really enjoyed this novel!
I thought that this was paced really well, I found it an easy read.
There were a LOT of business conduct issues and blurred lines from a professional point of view.
Like I’m not being funny, Mickey, Arlo and Tom all needed to be fired.
I especially did not agree with Mickey being able to keep her job after what she did - firstly child endangerment and also no parent wants their child in the presence of an adult with an addiction problem. The whole thing was irresponsible imo.
The reveal of them finding out they’re sisters was weak.
The way Mickey treated her mum was crazy.
And on TOP of that she pawned Daria’s cat??? She was forgiven too easily for that and she lost my sympathy too.
This was a good look at addiction and how it can affect you and those around you. But some things were too ridiculous and too convenient imo. And really neither of the sisters are likeable which made this a harder read - there wasn’t enough of a relationship or steady growth between them for us to really understand and empathise with their situations.
