POV: You’ve just lost your father. You were by his side, caring for his every need, only to find out he cut you and your mom out of his will at the last minute. You’re left with nothing.
POV: You’re the estranged daughter. You haven’t spoken to your father in years, but you’ve just inherited $5.5 million—if you complete seven therapy sessions. Oh, and he’s already chosen the therapist for you.
POV: You’re dying and full of regrets. So, you leave everything to the daughter you abandoned and as one final twist, you send her to therapy, referring her to a therapist who, unbeknownst to her, is actually her stepsister.
This book is highly unethical (lol), but it was also interesting, funny, and full of messy family dynamics. It follows two daughters processing grief in very different ways. They’ve led completely separate lives, but the one thing they have in common is their father—and all the chaos he left behind.
It’s such an interesting look at how two people can be shaped so differently by the same man; whether he was present, absent, or somewhere in between. This story was messy, emotional, a little wild, lost me in some parts but overall, I was into it.

Darkly funny and downright sad at the same time. Arlo and Mickey are two of the messiest women I’ve read in a long time but they’re also two characters I’d love to spend time with. As a former pre-k teacher, Mickey’s love for teaching was so evident but her brokenness broke my heart. Speaking of broken things, Arlo is the car mechanic with the broken cars in the driveway. Realistically flawed but so freaking likeable, I loved both of them.
If you like stories about family trauma and dysfunctional individuals, you’ll like this one. Just gotta shout out the dark humor again because it was so perfect.

I didn’t hate it, but I really didn’t love it. It was just okay. The portrayal of therapists was complete garbage. I get that she has to be flawed, but Arlo is an absolute disaster of a human and should have lost her license. That definitely bugged me. Anyway. It was just okay. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Favorite Daughter
by Morgan Dick
4 out of 5 stars
When Mickey's father dies, she meets her half-sister in an interesting and unexpected way.
I accidentally came across this book when looking for another with a similar title. I decided to give it a try, and I am glad I did. I really liked the story of Mickey and Arlo and could empathize with both characters. I think they were both really well written and true to life.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about families and their struggles.
