Love Love Love this book! One of my favorite series EVER! I love Diana's character and her house as a character. I love how this book's take on vampires is original and creates a world that doesn't have werewolves. It makes it a better story and more original. The book is big but I found I never wanted it to end!

Trop de clichers dans un univers pourtant prometteur. Mais le coup de la dame en détresse qui doit être protégée (même contre son grès) par un vampire dangereux et ténébreux (et surtout infecte et abusif) ne passe pas.

I didn’t like the writing style. Could just be the mood I am in, I’m sure I’ll try it again one day.

Curse you, compulsion to finish a book I don't love!

This book was billed as "Harry Potter for grownups." Blurbs by respected genre writers suggested a deep dive into a fascinating fantasy world. I even bought it in hardback, assuming it would be one I'd read more than once and lend out. And it was just...meh.

If you like genre fiction (vampires, witches, romance), this will probably be a decent choice for you, as it is certainly full of lots of details and magical possibilities and vampire kisses and battles among magical beings and old castles and amazing libraries and Oxford and so on.

But if you only like genre fiction when it's great writing, this is a long book to commit to for fewer literary pleasures than you might expect for the time invested.

As I was reading this book, something about it felt off. I couldn't put my finger on it. Then, I watched the first episode of the series based on it. Naturally, it got me looking up stuff about it. An article pointed out how deeply it was inspired by the Twilight books. A bulb went on inside my head and my imagination replayed the scene. In it, the vampire asks our heroine to slowly walk past him while he heroically tries to master his desire to drain her of all her blood. And that's when things finally sense.

So, there you have it. A mostly bland heroine who is so helpless that she inspires a protective instinct in everyone she meets. Everyone but the bad guys, i.e. She also has hidden powers and is very special. The hero has a dark past and is into self-flagellation over it. He also has a bad case of thirsties for our heroine.

Not a terrible book, a lot to follow and the storyline sets up future novels
