Really enjoyed this story idea and the 3 different settings really came to life. Fun and intriguing! But a little too long of a book than necessary.

ummm.... Holy cow! Where do I even start?! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It will probably be my favorite this whole year. This was picked for our book club and when I realized how long it was - I was a little intimidated since I had procrastinated reading it right away, but was so happy that I did. The book is awesomely captivating. It has been a while since a book has grabbed me like this.

One of the reasons I love this book is because it focused so much on how creatures should be able to love whoever they choose. I feel like this is something we are dealing with everyday in the real world. People should be allowed to love whoever they choose as well.

I liked the characters so much. Diana was a little hard to relate to at the beginning - but after getting to know her more that changed. She went from being slightly immature for someone with a PHD, to a strong independent amazing character - who sometimes lets her emotions take control... but who doesn't? I am glad that Diana was spellbound and not just choosing to leave the magic because that was a little hard to believe. Why would anyone that had the ability to use magic give that up? Matthew was amazing! While he does have secrets & a past that eats at him, his flaws make him only more loveable! Another character I absolutely loved was Marcus. While he wasn't a HUGE role in the book - each time he was I found myself smiling.

I understand some people were angry about some of the mistakes the author made while writing the book, while some did stand out more than others... I don't think ANY of them hindered the enjoyment of the book. Also, I feel that she was very detailed and I could imagine each scene and character in my head with a clear picture. I think the book flowed along perfectly... especially being a longer book - authors can sometimes get lost along the way, but that did not happen. Also the amount of research she had to put in for this book is incredible!!

I liked that the vampire background was different from the so called "norm" of vampires in most books. A vampire that doesn't hunt for the need of blood, but the need of the hunt. And a yoga practicing wine fanatic - who knew? I thought I was pretty good at predicting what was coming in a story, but I kept being surprised every time.

Once I got to the last 10% of the book, I didn't want to finish, even knowing I already have the second book... I wish there was a way to read this book for the first time again & again. I have already started reading the second book & am equally hooked already!!!

Not for me! I enjoyed it in the beginning and had high hopes, but it ended up feeling forced and weird (the romance that is).

I read this when it first came out - really loved it. Fast paced and entertaining!

The synopsis on the back of this book made it sound like it was something I would love: a mysterious, enchanted book, a witch newly discovering her powers, and dark forces closing in to give it some spice and action. What the book really is, though, is a long, slow trek through the same old story of an overprotective vampire who falls in love with a mortal. It felt a lot like reading a slightly more mature version of Twilight.

Pretty much nothing happens. There are a few hints here and there of an overarching plot, but readers are not given enough detail to make it seem relevant next to the "great love story" of Diana and Matthew. And even their love story isn't all that compelling. We get almost no descriptions of Matthew other than the fact that he is tall, dark, brooding, and annoyingly overprotective/patriarchal. I really see no good reason for Diana to have fallen so completely and utterly in love with him.

Despite all of this, I will probably continue to read the series, mostly because I'm hoping Harkness will eventually get around to explaining the enchanted manuscript and all of Diana's amazing powers, but also because I'm a little bit of a masochist when it comes to finishing book series, even if I didn't particularly enjoy it.

So boring. There was absolutely zero need for this to be as long as it was. What passed for the plot made staggered appearances between descriptions of vintage wines and yoga classes. It truly felt like it was just padding out the word count. And every time the plot dared to try and peek in the book fled to a new location in which our main characters would just pad about domestically.

We got pages upon pages about the dates and smells of wine. About Diana Bishops grocery shopping trip. The tea she was drinking. The family making popcorn and playing scrabble.

What should have been the middle for a better book was the last few pages setting up for the main action. But it was bogged down instead with our leads passing out Halloween candy and giggling about their costumes.

When it wasn't boring it was downright infuriating with it's the controlling possessive man is a huge douchebag, but we're supposed to find that romantic and sexy.
