This sounds like an insult but I actually mean it as a compliment: This book is like if Twilight was written (more than slightly) better.
I wanted to like this so bad. I was raised in a Wiccan household, and slowly as I read I got more and more annoyed with this authors portrayal of witchcraft. I think she might’ve confused witchcraft and Wicca as the same thing? But what truly sent me over the edge was the “my ancestors died in the Salem witch trials” trope, and the “I’m a witch by blood” trope. I tried so hard to like this, and I understand the witch-by-blood trope is a fantasy prospective, and it’s not really what did me in.
I hate the “Salem witch trial ancestor” stereotype. If I had known, I wouldn’t have even bothered with this book.

I was surprised by how into the book I was at first, given that there was a lot of history and science being talked about. But it was very intriguing! My biggest gripe is that this book did not have to be so long—either cut down on the unnecessary items or have five shorter books compared to three hefty ones. I am very interested in the story and will want to know what happens next, but I will need to take a break before jumping into the second of the series.

I got partway through and gave up. I think it had potential but it needed a more heavy-handed editor. So much text despite the fact that nothing was actually happening. Maybe it got awesome later, but I just didn't care enough to finish it.
