Murderbot is back, and heโ€™s just as sarcastically grumpy as ever. And this time, Dr. Mensahโ€™s teen daughter is around, and I absolutely loved Murderbot dealing with her and her adolescence. ๐Ÿ˜‚

This is the first full length novel of the series, and I thought it was pretty fun. A little bit of mystery, a lot of action, and Murderbot being Murderbot, exactly like we like him.

We also get the return of an old favorite of mineโ€ฆ

Oh, and thereโ€™s feeeeeeeelings. (Sorry about the โ€œFโ€ word there. ๐Ÿ˜œ)

The ending was really fun, and only slightly dizzying, but in the best way.

And how we end things, Iโ€™m definitely looking forward to whatโ€™s ahead.

What this book is giving:
โœ… Sci-fi
โœ… Human/robot construct protagonist
โœ… Asexual/Non-gendered protagonist
โœ… Action
โœ… Old friends
โœ… โ€œbig adolescent human sigh noiseโ€

I love Murderbot. I laughed out loud reading this. I cringed. I gasped audibly. I cried. I laughed some more. Truly an epic story that had me on the edge of my seat. New cast of characters were a welcome addition to the Murderbot universe (although I forgot who was who very often). In many ways it was the same old Murderbot story, but also I felt more than ever we saw it grow in this book. TLDR: loved it.

I tried really hard to read this book slowly because I like these books a lot, and I used this book as a reward for myself for getting work done. I had a few very productive work days and still read this book quite quickly. Perhaps obvious caveat that this is #5 in a series and I don't think you are likely to like this book if you didn't like prior entries in the series. I can't tell if it would work as a standalone book, probably? But why not just read the series? This book had some great themes that felt relevant to me, personally, as a foster parent who is dealing with the emotions around having your kid go out into the world and away from you, and as a person who sometimes imagines there are areas of human experience that they only have partial access to. Your mileage may vary.
