This is the second Julia Alvarez book which I’ve read and I loved it! Her writing style is captivating and so easy to read without being too simple. I loved the sisters and plot lines as well as the book going backwards in time. The story was wonderful to read and really transported you to different places and times. Kind of a rushed ending to me which is the only reason I didn’t give it five stars but overall I really enjoyed this read!

I really feel like this book was written in Spanish and translated to English, but I guess it wasn't. There were moments stylistically in the sentences where I could just imagine how it would be directly translated into Spanish and it made more sense, like with the articles. I don't know if it was just me but just every once in a while I had to pause and re-read sentences because they didn't make any sense... Beyond that, I enjoyed the book (though for the first part I didn't even realize that it was being told in reverse chronological order...). The whole commentary on identity of immigrants and the assimilation into America was truly unique. I am a little sad that no story fully resolved, which kept me wishing that I knew what happened, but I suppose that was the point.
