some beautiful prose but mostly just not it for me

A sad and tragic story and unlike other Edith Wharton stories I've read. It's written in a very beautiful manner which adds to the somewhat haunting atmosphere the book creates.

So suspenseful and such detailed intricate interactions.

i didn't know juicy lit fic like this was around this long ago but wow, i really enjoyed it! i love tragic endings
and i think the irony that mattie was a carbon copy of zeena by the end was a nice touch.

OOF. what a gut punch.

I really enjoyed this book. The heartbreaking love that Ethan and Mattie had, the snarkiness of Zeena (although I always thought of Xena's battle cry at the mention of her name), and the sad ending. This was my first Wharton and it won't be my last.

I enjoyed Ethan Frome, but I don’t know if it’s something that will stick with me for a long time. I think Edith Wharton does an excellent job at building a sense of atmosphere (the cold is a character, almost), as well as creating such high stakes out of so little. You really feel immersed in the small world of these characters and it really is horrifying when things go wrong. I liked the twist in theory, but I felt that it’s execution was a little lacking; for how dramatic it was, I feel like we should have been allowed to linger on it a little more. Overall glad I read it!
