I had read this book when I was young and remembered it as not too interesting. In fact I barely remembered it.
Now, 20 years later, I find it quite extraordinary. Touching, very moving. Delicate. I find it perfect.

A depressing but interesting read. My first Wharton's and, I understand, different from her other work. I'm not entirely sure where my sympathies lie. Ethan has been dealt a shoddy hand in life, but so has his wife which could explain her bitterness. Anyway, be careful what you wish for.
There's a lot packed in just a few short pages. Not really my jam and I felt the format was a little disjointed (as told from an outsider from the actual story).
I read this book in High School but remember really thinking it was tragic and romantic.

This was actually VERY good for something that is from over 100 years ago. I should probably stop being amazed when classics turn out to be good, because it keeps happening, yet every time I am shocked and pleasantly surprised!
This is probably the most tragic love story that I have ever read.

Literally depressing. I don't like reading tragedies, or books that have an overtone of sadness... and quite frankly, I'm not sure I would have read this book had I known it was a tragedy. Honestly, I'm not sure how I made it to 26 years old without knowing anything about this book, but I did. I chose to read it because there are sooooo many classics that I've somehow managed to avoid and picked this one up. Regerts.
This is a book about a man trapped in a very sad circumstance with seemingly no escape. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. I understand that that is a reality for some people, but I'm not exactly reading to be in that reality. I would have appreciated even just a glimmer of hope. I just felt bad for Ethan.
I appreciate that it is short. And that Wharton did an excellent job at setting the scene and somehow making me feel cold even while reading it in the spring time in Florida (not cold). For that, I give this book 3 stars.
