“They seemed to come suddenly upon happiness as if they had surprised a butterfly in the winter woods.”
“The return to reality was as painful as the return to consciousness after taking an anesthetic”

Well, it's a tragedy. The characters are flawed. It was depressing. The writing is good, but not moving. I can see why it's a classic, but I can also see why it's not a mainstream classic.
Let's just put this out there right off the bat: I had to read this book for AP Literature. That being said, that's not the reason this book has only one star. It's because, at the very end of the novel, I hated every single one of the characters in the book. Ethan, the man everyone's supposed to pity because he's married to a sick, whining bitch. Divorce her, you dipwad. It's pretty obvious that Zeena, his wife, is inflating how sick she really is, and is just working in making his life miserable; he himself acknowledges that making him miserable is the only pleasure she has left. Why this novel is so popular I have no idea.

So i try everything in order to like this book. To said I fail in that is small word. I didn’t like it at all. First of all I LOVE Edith and I consider her novel “Age of Innocence as one of the best novels ever written. But this one even though style, narration and entire idea is so good just didn’t work for me. All 3 characters (above all title character Ethan) were kind of boring and I didn’t connect with book.

Probala sam bukvalno sve u pokušaju da zavolim ovu knjigu.

Come on guys this one really isn't as bad as y'all moan it is.
A sad, powerful story, beautifully written. Somehow, Edith Wharton manages to pack an entire life and it's tragedy into a very short novel. Her descriptions are beautiful and evocative: I could clearly picture the New England landscape and the three main characters. This is a book that will stay with me for a long time.
