Genuinely one of the most profound looks at war, grief, and growth I’ve ever read or seen. Pennypacker writes complex topics in a nuanced and comprehensible way that doesn’t hold your hand, nor does it insult you for not knowing. The reader learns and grows as much as Peter and Pax. She excellently depicts parallel, in nature vs nurture, chosen vs given family, and Pax vs Peter. There are a thousand reasons why this book is incredible. And, of course, Jon Klassen’s illustrations are top notch.

An emotional story of a boy, forced to leave his fox due to an encroaching war, and their journeys to reunite.

Recommend for: Adventure, bond with pets, realistic fiction.

It’s a sweet sad book. It moves a bit slow, but I do love that you get the boy and the fox’s story lines. The ending is predictable.

This book was so beautiful and touching. It made me feel deeply.

It’s been years since I’ve read a novel where the animal narrates part of story. Well, this did not disappoint re-entry into that field of writing.

Pax is a red fox who lived with a young boy named Peter for 5 years, following his rescue when he was only weeks old. Peter is forced to set Pax out into the wild when war strikes and his father joins the force. Peter instantly regrets giving in to the release and begins a long, dangerous journey to get Pax back.

Each chapter alternates between Pax’s and Peter’s journeys. It is absolutely stunning, heartbreaking, and thought provoking.

Highly recommended for all readers 9 and up.

A lovely somber tale about a boy forced to release the fox kit he raised, Pax, due to his father heading to war. He is forced to move in with his grandfather, but ultimately decides to run away and make his way back to where he had released Pax. He encounters an isolated and traumatized yet deeply perceptive older veteran who helps him heal from physical injury and prepare for the rest of his travel, and in return he helps her understand more about her own self worth.

This was a story of survival for both the boy and his fox, alternating their perspectives in a way that made it engaging and quick to read. It had themes of the senselessness of war and the resulting destruction of environment and flourishing habitats. And Pax finds his own family, both human and animal alike.
