Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. I think it's written really well in general, and I appreciate the story's subtleties, but some things about it bothered me.

It kind of seemed to imply that coyotes were a danger to foxes and humans, when generally they don't attack either unless they're in the coyote's territory.

Then, I also feel we should've gotten some sense of what Peter's life would be like at the end, too. But perhaps the ending it has is best.

A coming of age story of a boy and his fox.

"As he traveled, the memories of those hungry-eyed animals accompanied him, darting and retreating like accusing ghosts.
He wished he could tell them that he knew how it felt to have the one person who had loved you and taken care of you suddenly vanish. How the world suddenly seemed dangerous after all.
He had lost a parent. How many kids this week, he wondered had woken up to find their world changed that way, their parents gone off to war, never coming home? That was the worst of course. But what about the smaller losses?
How many kids missed their older brothers and sisters for months at a time? How many friends had had to say goodbye? How many kids went hungry? How many had had to move? How many pets had they had to leave behind to fend for themselves? And why didn't anyone count those things? "People should tell the truth about what war costs", Viola said.
Weren't those things the cost of war too?

Beautifully written book. A very moving story with lots of material for discussion. But be warned, it is also a very sad book about war. Sensitive readers are likely to be upset by what happens to some of the foxes.

I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😍🦊🦊🦊🦊🐌

I enjoyed listening to this book, but I felt like I could "hear" the author through the story, if that makes sense. This distracted me from Peter and Pax, and I was slightly disappointed.
