I wanted to love this but I just didn't. It all felt so vague and odd and it was mostly sad. Great illustrations though!
Long journey with some excitement and heartfelt moments wedged between glacial chapters. Pax could stand to shed 10ish chapters. Still worth a read, but not recommended for very young children due to some violent moments.

“The plain truth can be the hardest thing to see when it's about yourself. If you don't want to know the truth, you'll do anything to disguise it.”
An absolutely great read for middle grade or anyone who enjoys middle grade/children's literature. It delves deep into the subjects of what makes a home a home, loyalty, and the need to trust in others. The chapters alternate between Peter, the boy, and Pax's, the fox's, point of view. This is nice because it is giving reader's the understanding of what both characters are going through and their feelings. It allows us to see how they evolve as characters over time as they learn to navigate their new worlds.
It is definitely a classic story of a kid and their animal best friend and I am glad I took the time to read it with my class. It opens up dialogue to speak of empathy and the importance of getting to know others despite your initial judgements of them.
The first halfish does come across a little slow, especially for kids who aren't really interested in reading and only care about action, but that overall I really have no complaints. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone whether you have kids or not.

An imaginative engrossing story. For me, it ends too abruptly. I felt sympathy for a fellow author who may not have known how to end this story after such a long build up to a reunion.

A medium-paced children’s book that’s adventurous and emotional. The beautiful coming-of-age story of a boy and his fox, it’s the first in a series, which I hadn’t realized, but I’ll be finding the others ASAP. Keep a box of tissues handy.
Read Pax aloud to my sixth grade reading class as part of the Global Read Aloud. They students really connected with the relationship between Pax and his boy, Peter, and the duel perspectives and duel journeys of Peter and Pax. Enchanting book!
This is a fun story about a boy and his pet fox, about growing from and dealing with hardships in life, and about how we can impact other people's lives in both positive and negative ways.
