Though I found the essence of the story, the one between a boy and his fox to be beautiful, the rest of it was lacking for me. I got that the moral of the story was how destructive and far reaching war is, but the setting and time were so vague it actually lessened the impact some. The characterization was great, the prose well rendered, and I loved the story told from Pax's point of view. But I think the moral behind the story would have been stronger if the reader, especially a middle grade reader, knew when or where this story was taking place. Yes, war generates death and atrocity, and it is better if diplomacy can win over force. Unfortunately, as long as there are extremists intent on forcing their ideas of world order on everyone, or intent on building some super race and destroying everyone who doesn't fit their idea of perfection, there will always be a war. I appreciate the efforts the author took to illuminate the costs that war takes on nature, and the psyche of soldiers called to serve. It is important not to glorify war and battle as someting it's not. But it also shouldn't be glossed over why some battles have been fought in the past despite efforts to avoid them.
Endings have been the difference makers between 4 and 5 stars! This one feels abrupt and left me devoid of the feelings I thought I would have.
3.5 stars?
Not quite what I expected and a tad uneven, but lovely style overall and a great book to discuss.

this book was just not interesting. SAD yes - but I had the hardest time WANTING to pick this book up and its only 280 ish pages.
Sweet, sweet, sweet. And well written. Come of age story for a boy and for his fox. I really feel like I know what it feels like to be a fox now. Even better, I just fell in love with Pax the fox and his journey, and I enjoyed the journey of his human, too. The ending is just right, which is giving away nothing. Great read, the world has needed a good new animal story.
One cool element of the story is that it is placed in an unspecified America, in the future, with a war going on. Very interesting element to add some angst, but don't worry, it doesn't get into the details.

Why do stories about animals tear me up so? It’s because they are better than us all and we don’t deserve them.

I’ve been hoping my son would read this- he is worried about a sad ending so I read it instead. Beautiful story.
This story of Peter and his pet fox, Pax will warm your heart and break it in two. This middle grade novel is currently part of the 2022 Reading Olympics which my son is participating in so I'm reading along with the books he chooses to read for the challenge.
War is coming and Peter's father knows that the world is not safe and he makes Peter drop Pax off in the woods before dropping Peter off at his grandfather's house as Peter's father is off to fight in the war. Peter is heartbroken by his father forcing this on him but makes a vow to come back to the same spot in the woods and find his friend. This story is in both Peter's as well as Pax's perspective; for me Pax's perspective shows the innocence of animals. Peter's vow is not an easy one to keep as almost everything seemingly is trying to keep him and his fox apart and war gets closer and closer.
