Wow, what a story of friendship, determination, and discovery!
Thanks Lizzy for recommending and letting me borrow this book!

Wow... It's been ages since I've read a book in one go... And it was incredible!! Pax is such an emotional and beautiful story. I was drawn in from page 1 and I stayed invested in the story until the very end.

This book deals with some heavy themes. Grief, betrayal and anger are some examples. But also loyalty, unconditional love and letting go. The author has done such a wonderful job with it all. I've had tears in my eyes multiple times because everything was so strong and beautifully written!

The switching of perspectives between Peter and Pax was incredible. I loved that even though they were separated, we still got to see and experience their love for each other and what their life was like when they were together. Their bond is so special, and I wish I could experience something like it. And the ending... Speechless. Tears were shed.

Reading from Pax' perspective (the fox) was my favourite thing. It was so interesting to see the world through the eyes of a tame fox who needed to survive in the wild. The contrast between his thinking and that of the wild animals really shed some perspective on the world. It provided some amazing commentary on humans and human behaviour. The way they described war and acted upon it was heartbreaking. I cannot imagine the fear and confusion animals must feel when their homes are destroyed. I feel like this book taught me some valuable lessons.

I just adore this book. I love love love middle grade stories because they are so full of emotion, valuable lessons and most of all, they are so incredibly human.

(Fun fact, this is the first book I borrowed from the library in years. And I am so happy that I did. I wonder if the people who held the exact same book as I did enjoyed the story just as much).

Extremely well written. I enjoyed this a lot! I do wish it had been a little more emotional but defiantly one of the better middle grade books I have read. A little bland, but I happen to like bland books.
medium-paced

I really wanted to love this book, I really did. I read so many 5 star reviews, and have even seen that this book is predicted to win the Newbery this year, that I thought this book would be on my all-time favorite lists.

The first thing that bothered me is that the setting is unknown. We know that it takes place during a war, and where soldiers are evacuating cities. Which war and where is never told, which bothered me. I know this will also bother some of my gifted students that question everything.

The other thing that really turned me off of this book is the fact that Peter's grandfather never came looking for him at Vola's house. This really did not seem real to me at all.

While the book is beautifully written in some parts, it was really hard to get started. The middle of the book was the best part, and I really liked the chapters from the foxes point of view. The ending was very disappointing and unsatisfying. I expected the ending, but it was too abrupt and not enough detail was given. Also, the story of Peter and Vola is not finished. Too many problems were left unsolved in this book.

این چه پایانی بود آخه.
حالا مجبورم جلد دوم رو هم بخونم.

Heart wrenching from the first paragraph and achingly beautiful too.

sweet story. some mature (for kids) content re: abuse and war.
