David found this Friday - I finished it Saturday night - went back for another copy for a friend Sunday. I LOVE IT!!! Such good writing, so many feelings - I cried. TWICE. (I never do that). Gorgeous book inside and out. Just find it and read it!

Peter is told to leave his pet Pax alone in the woods when his father drafts himself into the army and sends Peter to live with his grandfather.
Peter decides it was a mistake and goes back for him. He meets an army veteran along the way who teaches him many things, and helps strengthen him for his journey.
This book was very similar to "Homeward Bound" but better because it had great commentary on war, ptsd, and trauma.
Themes: War, Trauma, PTSD, Pets, Fox,

What a gem. Surprised at how much this story took hold of my heart and just kept squeezing. Even shed a few tears along the way. Destined to become a classic!
pg. 128 "PTSD - Post-traumatic forgetting-who-you-are disorder."
pg. 160 "He was linked to them in grief.."
pg. 186 "Two but not two..."
pg. 218 "We all own a beast called anger. It can serve us: many good things come of anger at bad things; many unjust things are made just. But first we all have to figure out how to civilise it."

Family read aloud. Several of my kids loved this. I thought it was long and boring and repetitive.

I really didn’t especially enjoy this in comparison to HITRW, but the kids seemed to enjoy this equally. My 9 year old cried at the ending & my 14 year old said it was unsatisfying at the end, but ultimately they voted to skip the sequel and move onto a new book, so…there’s that.
