I liked this book. The ending was a tad abrupt, and the marionette part irritated me, but I enjoyed it overall.

A boy and his fox, anger and father issues, themes of war. Slow moving at times, probably good for 10-12 year olds.

I really enjoyed this book about the bond between a boy and his fox. Clever use of alternating points of view. I'm always leery of books with animals on the cover...you typically know their fate. This will definitely find its way to my bookshelves!

This is a sad and rather beautiful story about the strong links we form with our beloved pets (in this case boy and fox), about loyalty, about fixing what we've done wrong, and about knowing yourself.

A war is coming and the boy's father sends him off to live with his grandfather about 200 miles away. He also insists that the boy abandon Pax (the fox) in the wild. This is the first time the boy has ever been deceitful to the fox and it hurts them both immensely.

As soon as the boy is at his grandfather's he realises how terrible it was to abandon Pax, and he runs away that very night to go back and rescue him. After all, Pax has never had to fend for himself. How will he eat? How will he survive? To complicate the journey, the boy doesn't get very far when he breaks his leg. A woman living alone on an old homestead ends up setting the leg and helping him until he's able to keep going.

At the same time we read Pax's story - his encounters with wild foxes, and with soldiers. We hear his thoughts and his conversations with the other foxes. We learn a lot about foxes, and a lot about love and loyalty.

This book is beautifully written - it handles difficult subjects in a sensitive way, yet keeps the pace going. Lovely!

A beautiful story that at times reminded me of Because of Winn Dixie. There are a lot of different themes happening in this book...family, loss, friendship, war. The place and time period are purposefully left vague which would make interesting book club conversations, Some of the violence, especially among the animals is pretty gruesome for younger readers. I would recommend for a mature grade 4 and up.

A pleasant book about loss, self discovery and change through the eyes of a young teenager and a little red fox. Sara made a lot of effort in placing thoughts and making Pax (the fox) have a voice of its own and it’s amazingly descriptive.

Very suitable for young teens!
