I barely met these characters and I was weeping. I won't say more about the tearjerker aspect of this book so avoid spoilers.
Book Talk: Two but not two. Inseparable. Joined at the hip. Two so close they could be one. Peter and Pax. Peter the boy. Pax the red fox. They've grown up together until war comes and two might become two. Separable.

A sweet story of a boy and his pet fox who end up separated during a time of war. Unexpected ending.
I had a dream about a fox in a tree with yellow blooms a few weeks ago. For years I didn't remember any of my dreams so the fact that I do remember this one has given it a significance I'm not sure it deserves, but the visuals were beautiful. So when I saw a book about a fox at Target, I thought, maybe I should read it? I didn't buy the book that day, instead I checked Libby and a copy was available. Clearly the universe was sending me a message -- books are NEVER available on Libby without weeks of waiting.
Overall, this book is kind of a downer but I enjoyed the Pax chapters and loved Vola, a woman Peter meets while adventuring through the woods. The ending wasn't what I wanted it to be, but I understand it, and I immediately checked out (and started reading) the follow-up, [b:Pax, Journey Home|56645913|Pax, Journey Home (Pax, #2)|Sara Pennypacker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610662089l/56645913._SX50_.jpg|88515513].
I can't figure out where or when this book is supposed to take place. It could be present day, it could be some alternative past, or possibly the future? So I settled on an alternate reality where there are water wars. (I guess it could be our future one day.)

This book is written for 8-12 year olds, but this forty-something reader found herself in tears at the final pages. One of the most powerful anti-war stories I've read, at any age.

I kind of hated reading this...yet at the same time, I think it was very, very well written. The language, the themes, the character development...lots of layers and thoughtfulness. She doesn't mince language with some of the darker aspects of growing up, life, and war .
I can definitely see this being considered for Newbery Awards this year, and while I had some issues with the place/time period (as many seem to have), I'm not convinced that will rule it out of contention.

I really fell in love with the characters. The older woman was particularly impressionable.
I thought this book was written more for adults than children. I know that there was some epic literary elements, but I kept thinking about the movie Fox and the Hound. I want to read it again this summer after I have thought about it more.
This book hurt more than a children’s book should.
My mind whispering towards the end: “Throw it. Just throw it.”
