I wouldn't go so far as calling it a masterpiece but after so many people have recommended it to me,  I read it finally and wasn't disappointed.  It's wildly inventive and just having concepts I haven't seen before gives it an extra thumbs up in my book.

My biggest problem with the book is the
whole set up. I get that Rosemary doesn't know that she has to fo through the entire fake identity thing at the beginning of the book,  but by the time it's forced into the open,  it's clear that it would have been okay with the captain.

Let's see. I found everything about the Sianat interesting and I really liked everything about the different types of families.

i don’t quite know what to say.

i received this as my first book in from my mr b’s reading subscription, and although i didn’t read it until much much later, when i finally did i realised just how perfectly my “reading therapist” had read me.

for the first time in years, i want to read - and that’s saying something as an english student. this book is about so many different types of love. sure, it’s not an action packed page turner, but it’s a page turner nonetheless. because even in the darkness of space, there’s a light of love on the other side.

I struggled to get into this at first, with it's episodic structure and low stakes storytelling, but the world building and interesting cast of characters kept me going to the end.
I would categorise this as a comfort read, since the focus is fully on the found-family ensemble rather than on action or jeopardy.
It loses a star because, for me, a lot of the inter-crew conflict, such as it is, is resolved far too easily with no lasting repercussions. Overall it's message is of tolerance and understanding, and how we reconcile (or not) our personal ethics with politics which seems distant and dangerous.

There’s so much to love. Bookshop pitched it to me as a “scifi book for people who don’t like scifi” (except I loove scifi) BUT that’s totally true. I can see this being an exceptional rec for people wanting to dip their toe in the genre. With something that’s character driven, cosy and queer.

My only gripe is some of the adventure happened off page! I resolved myself that the book was more focused on the characters, and honestly it didn’t really change how much I love this book (the end tension is all on page). Because ultimately it’s the characters that drove the story, and I love them all. I just wish I had a few extra cheeky chapters of the struggles, or will they won’t they adventuring!

Great fun! Similar in feel to JS Morin's "Black Ocean Mobius Missions" but being longer explores very satisfying character arcs/interpersonal scenarios.

Loved the characters, loved the world it built. My only issue (and this is more personal than anything) is that it was a lot to keep track of. A lot of species and characters. Chambers does a great job at making them feel distinct and real. It was just a lot for my mind to take. I actually would have liked a bit more of the crew going through things all together on the ship. There was a lot more visiting other planets than I expected. Not in a bad way. Just unexpected.
