Finally finished the Overhaul arc. Ending after the license trainees vs elementary schoolers and with the Aoyama/cheese moment

This volume is best read right on the heels of the preceding one. I did not, and some of the clean up from the battle in Vol. 17 confused me. Still, once the action of this volume got going, I enjoyed it. Obviously I'm in love with these series and will keep going, but this one reminded me why I don't usually read a lot of superhero comics.

So glad to FINALLY see the end of the Eri & Chisaki plot. It was like 5 volumes long.

I enjoyed the emotional bits with Mirio, Midoriya and Nighteye a bit. It was interesting seeing Todoroki and Bakugo deal with not being involved as the rest of their class risked their lives yet again.

This volume only furthered the disconnect between how the female characters are treated and developed compared to the male characters. To preface, I didn’t go into this series unaware that the female characters didn’t get treated well in it. It’s common issue mentioned when people discuss the show on TikTok. It just sucks that, in addition to the sexualized costumes and women being reduced to sex symbols to do commercials when they become heroes, they’re disrespected by other female characters, too?

In this volume, we get the only female character in the provisional licensing course being treated like a hussy because she thought Todoroki was a attractive. And this is coming from elementary school girls. I just... don’t understand what the point of that was? Who was that for exactly? Were young boys supposed to read that and laugh?

Anyway, I tend to just do my best to ignore the female characters all the together because... well, the series does too and it’s easier that way.

Here we see the close of the arc from previous volumes, with Deku working with Eri to defeat Chisaki, a member of the Yakuza who wished to turn everyone back to a time when they weren't born with quirks.

We also see the make-up exam for those who failed their provisional licensing, namely Todoroki, Bakugo, Camie (the girl that Toga replaced in the original exam), and Inasa. They are to "cooperate to open up the kids' hearts," nothing at all like the original exam, but it does give them a chance to show that they can work together and there is worth in being a hero.

This was a mixed volume. I really loved the continuation of the battle between the Yakuza and the heroes. It showed how Deku could utilise his full power, gave him his first huge battle that was literally life or death and showed how dangerous some quirks can be even when used for a good reason.

There was actually some character deaths in here too which shocked me, especially one of them as they were considered to be a big hero within the story but I also think they were introduced just for this reason, as a catalyst for change further up the chain of characters while having a ripple effect on other's thoughts.

I'm not sure how I felt about the final part. It seemed really immature and silly but then it was something that brought the tone down to close off the arc and leave us to open the next High School Festival in Volume. 18.

Artwork was slightly different in this volume but I only noticed it at the start so I'm not exactly sure what was wrong. It was still really well done with some great illustrations that make reading this series a lot of fun.

Finally, what was that ending about! WTF!
