I have a fear of flying and these types of books always get me worked up, in a good way. But, for some reason, this one just didn’t do it for me. It was a good book and I don’t regret reading it but it just didn’t push the buttons like other books of this kind do. 3-stars = I liked it but it was nothing special.

This is highly-readable and fast paced but it fell short for me in a lot of ways. Most notably the choice to make the terrorists Kurdish immigrants, and having them hijack a plane with the intent to crash it in either DC or NYC in order to raise awareness about the US's role in the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. Leaning into the gross stereotype of Middle Eastern terrorists hijacking a plane in 2021 is disappointing. Also it's unclear why this particular family was the target beyond the pilot's professional connection with his co-pilot. The scenes with the FBI really dragged. The New York Yankees propaganda and the weird nationalism on display at the end made me gag.

Steven Weber's narration of the audiobook was the one good thing. Thanks to LibroFM and the publisher for the gifted copy.

The author’s background as a flight attendant made for some fun up close knowledge of the job. Very “Americuh” in so many of its characterizations (all American hero pilot and his strong, devoted beautiful wife, the male FBI agent who goes rogue but is ultimately rewarded for following his instincts and not the rule book, among others) but I really had fun reading it.
