I wanted so much more for this story! The first half of the book was good and as always I love Ayana Gray’s writing. The ending was not it. To much was convenient in the last half of the book and the epic battle was very anticlimactic. Overall a let down after how great the first two books were.

I’m not sure if I hyped myself up too much or what, but the ending of this left me disappointed.

Now that my initial disappointment has worn off, I realize that I was being a little unfair. This is a good book. It is my least favorite in the series, but if you take away the last 20ish pages, it’s phenomenal. I’m not going to knock a book that much for something that is ultimately my fault — since I did not tamper my expectations appropriately. There were a lot of gut punches in this book.

Honestly, as much as this book is driven by the plot... I couldn't really tell you what the purpose of the plot is. But I also could not stop reading and this is one of my favorite YA fantasy series so I honestly don't really know how I feel about this book!

Honestly I love the trilogy as a whole. I just didn't like how the final battle was so rushed 🤷🏽‍♀️

I got 49 pages in before dnf’ing.

I do want to start by saying this book has a lot going for it, but it just isn’t really for me.

I remember liking Beasts of Prey when that came out. But then Beasts of Ruin fell so flat. To the point I don’t actually remember what happened in that book. Which majorly played into me dnf’ing this book.

I don’t connect with Koffi at all. To me she just reads as very juvenile. Fedu reads as a creep, but seeing as he’s this villain, I feel like that’s more intentional. For Ekon he has anxiety and a very specific way of dealing with it.

I love the world with its African setting and base. It’s great. But it doesn’t make up for the characters for me.

"Your strength is in your bones and in your blood, and no one can take that from you."

Excuse me while I sit in denial that this trilogy is over.

What a fantastic conclusion!! Beasts of Prey was one of my favorite books the year I read it, partially due to the completely immersive world, but mostly because Koffi and Ekon felt so real to me. I read so much that it's rare for characters to stick with me, but they're both characters that I think of them all the time. Ayana Gray did them both such a service with this book; I truly cannot think of a better way for their story to have ended.

Without going into spoilers or plot-specifics, this was perhaps one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. The mythology, the banter, the setting, Ayana Gray's flawless playlist; they all created such an enjoyable reading experience that led to me flying through this book. Despite my sadness that it's over, I can't help but feel like the story met such a satisfying end.

Beasts of War cemented this as one of my favorite YA trilogies of all time. I will happily continue to recommend it to everyone.

Now, I shall return to anxiously awaiting an announcement for whatever Ayana Gray is working on next because I will - in fact - read everything that woman writes for the rest of time.

Beasts of War by Ayana Gray is an absolutely solid ending to an amazing YA fantasy trilogy. We start immediately where we left off Beasts of Ruin and we follow Kofi and Ekon through their very action packed journey as they attempt to throat Fedu in his path of destruction.

This series finale finally ties up all the complex characters that we've seen since book 1, bringing together all the plot lines and all the events that take place since the beginning of the series. At the same time we meet lushly imagined new and exciting magical beasts and a whole host of fantastic, full bodied characters.

This was super highly engaging and I'm truly sad to see this series come to a close. I can't wait to read what else Ayana Gray comes up with.

Thank you to Penguin Teen for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
