Even though books 2 and 5 were my most anticipated ones in this series, I was interested in reading what seemed like a different approach to the marriage of convenience trope (which it was!), and I was so down for it bc I'm not a big fan of the average version of this trope.
I may sound repetitive here, because this is something I always say every single Chloe Liese book I read, but boy this woman really knows how to write male characters. Axel is way different than his other brothers, in terms of how he deals with being in love with Rooney and his language of love. However, It was so refreshing!! I don't know how Liese always manages to write such imperfect but at the same time charming, considerate and romantic MCs, but I love to highlight this in every book of hers.
I do have to say, that sometimes the chemistry was off. I don't know what was it, but in some moments I was like "omg they're so romantic and perfect for each other" but in others I thought "how am I supposed to believe these two are in love?", so they were extremely weird, these ups and downs. But I do feel it is important to mention it because it may indicate that the pacing of the book was a bit off.
In addition, just like how Chloe Liese writes excellent MCs every single time, she did the 90% conflict, which I've mentioned before I'm not particularly fond of. In fact, it may be the only thing I truly dislike in her books. That being said, I loved how the reconciliation was managed here! Such a cute and romantic gesture from Axel, I was sold!!
Another thing I didn't particularly like about the book is the reason behind all this plot they got into. From the synopsis (this is not a spoiler), we know Axel must get his hands in a heritage his uncle left him. but he must have a wife to do so. And okay, I know marriage of convenience is not the most realistic trope in the romance genre, but I appreciated when they make the plot and their reasons make sense. When the reason behind his uncle's condition was revealed, it just felt out of the blue and I didn't like that.
Finally, I'm really grateful to Chloe Liese because not only does she offer such amazing autism rep (#ownvoices stories), but she has also taught me about so many chronic illnesses, which I don't think are represented enough and I wouldn't find out abot any other way.
