Really engaging and well written! I only DNFed as I had to return to the library and have a ton of other books to also read, lol.
3.5 stars maybe? Wasn't super invested in the characters of this middle grade Chinese mythology story, but the storytelling and voice acting was on point.
I think this is a great book, but it happened not to appeal to me.
Beautifully evocative prose, and gorgeously illustrated.
A cold and dark time, evil rulers who seem to be all-powerful...hard not to read this as metaphor. But through it all, the reminder that, "...stories are how we share our lives and what we truly mourn when they are lost. Stories are what connect us to our past and carry us to our future. They are what we cherish and what we remember." p. 370
Pinmei’s quest to rescue her grandmother, a beloved storyteller from a tyrannical emperor truly has the same feel and heart of Lin’s other book “When the Mountain Meets the Moon”. It has a slightly more dangerous path while having a few surprises along the way, but still a marvelous and touching tale. A (100%/Outstanding)
