This, as with the 2nd book, follows yet another character but a familiar one: Sieh. As always Jemisin is a master at world building. It was so interesting seeing this world change so much over the course of three books. It was a good end to the trilogy too. The only thing I didn't like was the narrator was different from the first two and idk if the original or this one was more correct in their pronunciations but the difference in certain names was jarring and took me out of the book when I first started listening. It took a good few hours to get over it and get into the book because of that. It might not be as noticeable if you wait between listens but I jumped right in after finishing book 2. So if you go the audiobook route keep that in mind.

Well, I tried. And starting this book with the assumption I was going to dislike it had me going for a while- I was actually enjoying it and thinking I might have to re-read the first 2 books in the series, which I don't remember very well. Then it dragged on for a bit, got into the dimension-of-the-gods stuff and I was right back to wondering why these books are so well reviewed.
Oh well, like I said- I tried.

I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of NK Jemisin until this year which is insane to me now but there you go. I am glad that I came across her name on some best sci-fi books by black authors list because this series is excellent. It's quickly become one of my favorite series ever. Definitely a strong recommend!

NK Jemisin is very good at building complex narratives in deeply intricate worlds.

I don't think the series actually went downhill, I think I just stopped caring enough to make an effort. 1400 pages of petty emotions and ill-defined powers, arbitrarily used, is just too much.
