The hype surrounding this book is real.  With beautiful, lush colors and patterns, a laugh-out-loud design style that would make Molly Bang proud, and a narrative that will have you guffawing, Pokko and the Drum easily makes for one of the best picture books I've read all year.  It's creative and promotes that same creativity to the little ones reading it--because sometimes, little ones know best.  It promotes community, and learning, and gaining new skills.

But before I move any further, can we talk about the wolf that ate the rabbit?  And the rabbit didn't come back to life somehow?  Praise be the lord, this is some Jon Klassen storytelling.  Which, by the way, if you like Jon Klassen, you'll fall in love with Matt Forsythe.

The narrative repetition?  Hilarious.  The angling of Pokko that leads our eyes to the following page?  Genius.  The woodsy colors with splashes of teal?  Incredible.

Pokko and the Drum sure to capture the hearts of both children and their caretakers, and is surely the perfect book for a librarian's storytime.  Just know that your children will be drumming away on anything they can!  Encourage that creativity, and let it shine.  Just...maybe don't get your child a life-size slingshot...

I, too, would like to be a frog in a mushroom whose worst mistake is giving a young child a drum.

SpoilerAlso am I a bad person for cracking up at the rabbit getting eaten and everyone just...moving past it??? Nature is wild.

just based on the cover, I wasn't excited by this one, but it turned out to be an excellent story

Delightful and unusual while also giving us shades of classic children’s book illustration, a la Frog and Toad

Great illustrations, great humor, great characters — so it’s no surprise that I think this is a great book.

I love how bold Pokko is. I love how her mother can’t put down the book she’s reading. And I love the llama.

One of the best picture books I’ve seen this year.
