I was expecting a gritty southern thriller and was pleasantly surprised by the depth and poignance of some of the issues tackled in this book. Some hard hitting one liners I took the time to highlight even though it was an audiobook, which says something. Titus is a character that will stick with me for a while. Sign me up for the rest of SA Cosby’s work.

A great thriller, but I had very high expectations. I don't really read many books with race issues as the main part of the story, so I enjoyed that perspective, and I should definitely make an effort to read more. I think what brought it down for me was being given the back story of every minor character. It really slowed down the story. Also, the mixup between aquarium and terrarium really annoyed me. If it was said once, fine, but it was used about 10 times in one chapter. The author, who seemed like a great writer up until then, should have known better.

Not for me. I found this one very preachy. The race and religion centered monologues didn’t seem natural or genuine. It was too much, and borderline pretentious. Most of the characters I could barely distinguish from the next. The conclusion of the novel didn’t seem to tie in with the rest of the book.
