S.A. Cosby writes such a rich, true-feeling ensemble around his main characters, even more so in this than in Razorblade Tears (my favorite of his novels so far). Charon was a delightfully gothic setting, and as in RT, Cosby was unsubtle - in the best way - in his theming and social commentary. The crimes at the center of the mystery are disturbing and graphic, but don't feel gratuitous or cheap. I'm also impressed by the depiction of a hero sheriff that, in spite of his heroics, still (appropriately) feels like more of an indictment of the criminal justice system than an endorsement. Easy 4.5 ⭐
Graphic: Racism, Torture, Violence, Mass/school shootings, Murder
Moderate: Body horror, Child death, Gun violence, Racial slurs, Religious bigotry, Alcohol

YES!!!!! I loved this book. I have had a tough start to my reading year and finally I got a 5 star. This author has been on my radar for a long time. So bummed I waited, I will be reading Razorblade Tears this year for sure.
What a great thriller/horror story. Great build up. It is graphic and involves children, so be careful but wow, wow wow! You were pulling so hard for Titus and he built the background of what it is like for a black sheriff in a small southern town. The good, the bad and the ugly. I laughed out loud at the end of the book.
Plus I learned a lot of new words. I am an educated person and I read a lot but I had to keep looking up words. Appreciate the vocabulary lesson!
