Was hooked from the first page, but the rest of the book didn't quite live up to that for me. But still a solid and engaging serial killer thriller. If you like the Red Dragon Hannibal universe or Dennis Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro series you'll probably like this too.
Ending and the killer reveal was rushed, and I wish the town and townspeople (and any of the women) had been more developed, as the specific setting of a small dying southern town is so central to the story, but there were also so many subplots or things mentioned that went nowhere. But I think it was just to show the rot of the town.

as I was reading I realized this was probably a bit out of my comfort zone but I really enjoyed the story and the characters - it explored racism, murder, and grief in such an interesting way
I want to start off by saying this is the best audiobook experience I’ve had, and to tip my hat to Adam Lazarre-White. I don’t have enough words, but if this book interests you - strongly consider the audiobook.
I’m pained to give this four stars, because for 80% of this book, I was completely and utterly absorbed. I felt like the tie-up and ending was so anti/climactic and at odds with how the rest of the story was written.

My first SA Cosby book- and definitely won’t be my last. From the first paragraph, this story had a grip on me. More than just a gripping crime thriller, it’s a powerful exploration of grief, religion, race, justice, and trauma, all set against the backdrop of a Southern town that feels hauntingly real.
