I didn’t get the villain’s motives at all. Wasn’t that compelling. Maybe because I didn’t read any comics before 1998??

Full disclosure, I did not read volume one, and I think this would have had more of a [favorable] impact if I had. I had this for seven months, though, without getting the first volume, and figured I might as well read it.

The good: Brubaker has Matt's voice and life nailed to a T. The art is beautiful and dynamic, the way Daredevil moves.

Unfortunately, I think it was bogged down by meaningless adventures in Europe. Much of the landscape and characters there don't really feel like they'll have much impact on Matt going forward; they're just there to be exotic and sexy.

Next, too much fridging, with Fisk and Page. Both of their tragedies are in causing man pain and man guilt. And with that comes too much resolution. Foggy, Matt, Fisk taken care of. Maybe there's the European woman still on the loose, but so what? These big momentous snapshots happened, and too many ends tied to each other.

That said, I am interested in where Matt goes after this. Probably to a worse place, but he's in transition.

Would not recommend if all you know of Daredevil is from the Netflix show.

The noir-ish shift really catches on in this one. More superheroes should go to Europe. Mostly this reminded me of how great Wilson and Vanessa are in the Netflix series.

Daredevil is my first foray into Brubaker's writing. After a tightly crafted storyline, an examination of pushing a character past his breaking point, an inevitable yet surprising ending -- aside from overusing ellipses -- I will be back for more.

This was still good - Matt is searching all over Europe for the person who had Foggy (apparently) killed. I didn't like the ending all that much, because while the conflict between Daredevil and Kingpin is certainly interesting, what happened here was a bit too contrived. Still, this is a bit like watching The Sopranos - even when it isn't top-notch, it's still better than almost anything else.

I think some of the characterization feels a little off here, and the "climax" definitely feels rushed, but Brubaker and Lark/Aja are so damn good on this that I barely care. As good of an ending as we were going to get to "Daredevil goes to jail".
