I added this to my TBR upon hearing that a Spaniard wrote it, I'm keen to read more Spanish literature. I ignored the fact that this was a thriller. It seems you can't escape them.
Anyway, this will be somewhat different from the American, British or Australian. At least I hoped so.
Red Queen is a clandestine organisation that focuses on solving high-stakes crimes.
Antonia Scott is a British-Spanish woman, in her mid-thirties, the most intelligent woman in the world. She worked for the Red Queen but she quit.
Jon Gutierez (wrongly mispronounced by the audiobook narrator as John, it should sound like [yawn]) is a gay, overweight, forty-something policeman, who's been disgraced in the media and is suspended. When someone calls and asks he gets Antonia Scott into a car in exchange for making his troubles go away, he's got nothing to lose.
That's how Antonia and Jon get entangled. There are some crimes, including a kidnapping that they need to solve. It's all fast-paced.
The omniscient narrator introduces us to different characters and brings up some past occurrences that allow us to get to know the main characters.
Upon finishing this novel I felt deflated, the baddies' motivations weren't clear or made much sense. Ultimately, Antonia and Jon weren't that interesting. It's clear there's going to be a sequel.
I probably won't bother.

Really intriguing with some great characters. I do hope the rest of the series is translated and available soon.
I have many questions that I hope are answered in the sequels. I was happy the two main characters will be working together again. I worry about the answers Antonia might discover to the many questions remaining.

I'm mad I finished it.
I do not understand the hype around this book at all. The pacing is wildly inconsistent, somehow nearly all of the characters are misogynistic, and there is an over reliance on cringey and unnecessary plot devices.
Worst of all, they don't resolve the mystery by the end, like not even a little.

I’m not agreeing with whoever said Antonia Scott appears to be above Lisabeth Salander. I totally liked Antonia Scott but I can’t put her above Lisabeth Salander. Salander was not only an intelligent persona, she was a maths and Computers geek. The manifested hacking skills of Salander’s were top notch. I loved Salander and I still love her.
Also, the story was average. I didn’t feel awestruck. It was okay, not an oomph factor. Moreover, I enjoyed reading it, this book was like a roller coaster to me where somewhere I was hell excited to know what comes next and other time I was dragging myself to next chapters. I’ll still be looking forward for next books in this series. Bleh! I’m a murder mysteries freak.
