I have no idea how I feel about this book. The mystery was fun. Antonia is interesting. But if i have to read one more time about how Jon is “big but not fat!!” I will lose my mind. I cannot even express how often this is said in the book. Or how often remarks are made towards his size. “Hand the size of a paella pan”…. I highly doubt that. Or that Antonia is pretty when she smiles.

Predictable, fast-paced read. You’ve probably seen this plot dozens of times in movies and tv series. A genius on the spectrum who is trained by a shadow organization with a sad personal back story. She is teamed up with a marginalized detective (he’s gay) who has been disgraced in some way and assigned to our genius because she needs a keeper. They team up when the shadow organization needs help with a kidnapping/murder. Hilarity ensues. It was a good book, well-written. If you aren’t heavily immersed in this kind of criminal storyline you will probably like it. The book ends with a very obvious lead into the next book so this will be a series. And I’ll probably read that one too.

I read Red Queen as a book in translation.  It takes place in Spain.  Jon Gutierrez is a disgraced cop who is suspended.  He is asked by a group to get Antonio Scott to work on a case with him.  Antonio is brilliant but is haunted by tragedy.  She reluctantly agrees to work with Jon in order to save a women who has been kidnapped.  The story is very interesting.  We get glimpses of the past that help us understand the characters.  I enjoyed the mystery and the resolution and look forward to the next two books in the trilogy.  I would highly recommend this book if you love a good mystery with flawed but interesting characters.
