In the fourth book of the series, Doyle is being kept away from the cases that Acton is working on. He doesn't want her around that, however, things aren't as they seem, and Doyle knows that Acton is in danger from something he doesn't know about. She will do everything she can to keep him safe.
This book was okay. I'm getting really annoyed with Acton. I hate that he keeps so much from her, even the he knows she has abilities to find out what is really going on. So, that is getting really old. Plus it feels like he can't trust her, and that is why he doesn't tell her things, which in my opinion make it seem like their marriage and love is ridiculous.
Other than that I liked this one, and I liked how Doyle slowly started standing up for herself, but then she kept backing down so that wasn't cool, but she tried. I want her to stand up for what she believes in. I do look forward to more, but I'm hoping Doyle and Acton get a little bit better.

Excellent
I really, really like this cast of characters. Doyle, Acton, Williams, Reynolds, the lot. Interesting stories, lots of moral dilemmas, twisty mysteries... Excellent.

I was enjoying the series until I got to the record scratch, racist moment. *eye roll* Umm, castes are a Desi/South Asian thing and the dated racist stereotype of Chinese peeps following their own imported laws/hierarchy vs. local law is gross. It's also laughable coming from a character who (quote from blurb here) "has committed a containment murder or two of his own." Lolz Mr. I Respect English Common Law.
Here's the section I'm talking about and context is Acton explaining why he wanted a Chinese DC?/DS? to sit in on interview with a Chinese witness:
"... And what was Chiu's part, in this little holy show?"
He considered for a moment, winding his pasta against a spoon. "Many Chinese operate on a caste system; she has a royal attribute, and therefore her presence was helpful, so as to apply additional pressure."
But this seemed a bridge too far for Doyle, who stared at him in frank disbelief. "You're not tryin' to tell me that Chiu is royalty?"
"No; but she is of a particular caste. Many Chinese work within their own concepts of justice, and the English common law has little effect, one way or the other."
