The Way I Used to Be follows Eden in the aftermath of her being raped by her brother's best friend. It packs a real emotional punch. The story traverses the entire four years of high school and this relatively long time frame really allows the author to explore the continuing and ongoing trauma. It was sad and frustrating watching Eden self-sabotage and suffer alone and I wanted to yell at her parents, brother, friends, and teachers to dig deeper; to realise that the big changes in Eden's behaviour and appearance were the sign that something was very wrong with her and a cry for help. A harrowing tale with some understandable angst but one that ended with more than a glimmer of hope.
