This is the first book in a while where I feel like the book not being what I expected really hurt my enjoyment. I think I was looking forward to something more like Seanan McGuire's "Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day," or something a little more fantastical. I definitely wasn't expecting a rom-com. And that is how I would describe this book, even if the romance wasn't actually the point or even really relevant.
There were a lot of really good and interesting concepts here. But I just kept finding myself thinking of different ways the same thing could have been done and feeling disappointed that it didn't go that way. None of that is the fault of the book itself, though. If I wasn't so caught up on what it could have been, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot!
Also, the ending was very predictable. I had it figured out at like the 15% mark.
In any case, this is added to my growing list of books I think felt short as a book but I'd really love as a movie. It would work well as an hour and a half or so as a Christmas Carol retelling.
