dark mysterious fast-paced

The unreliable narrator thing doesn’t work if you know it’s coming. He was trying too hard to do something here.

some creative twists… overall pretty bad

Don’t waste your time. So slow. Audiobook narration is horrible as well. I liked the silent patient but what was this?

3.5 - I wouldn’t consider this book a thriller in the true spirit of the genre, but I found the twists and turns engaging, and the buildup rewarding. The narrator is admittedly not very likable, which makes it a bit hard to get on his side since he is directly involved in the plot. But of the cast of characters, he was the perfect choice to manipulate the strings. The author says in an author’s note that he wrote the book spontaneously, without mapping out the details or even knowing who the murderer or victim would be. It shows sometimes in the exposition that he was making it up as he went (very “but wait, there’s more!”). On the other hand, this makes some of the reveals genuinely surprising and unexpected, which is very fun. There’s a kaleidoscopic quality to the way that certain events are presented, and then subtly (or not-so-subtly) given a new lens.
