This was extremely hard to rate, I loved the writing style and basic set up in the beginning was amazing but as it went on, I enjoyed the main narrator character a little unenjoyable to read from and after finished the book I had a hard time deciding if I liked it as a whole or not. I think it’s definitely better than middle than road but by how much will really depend on how much one enjoys the writing style

4.5. I honestly really enjoyed this book and it’s unreliable narrator. I was thrown off a little by how over dramatic and suspenseful the writing was in the middle, especially the chapter ending, but it made sense in the end. Recommend for a fun quick read.

Eloquently written. Brilliant plot! Such an enjoyable read.

Well, I’m utterly disappointed.
I expected this to be a gripping mystery/thriller, it ended up being a lackluster literary drama instead. The advertised suspense was replaced with a dear diary perspective from an unlikable and pretentious unreliable narrator.
This trope alone is so overly done at this point..
To my dismay, the plot became even more uninteresting by turning into petty rich people drama, leaving me indifferent to their self-indulgent struggles.
Throughout, I was wondering if this would take a Silent Patient turn too, only to discover that this was indeed the "major" twist here as well.
While I appreciate intricate dynamics and relationship drama, the characters here were so unhinged and unrelatable that the only reaction they got out of me were just sighs and eye rolls.
So Alex Michaelides remains a one-hit wonder for me; I’ll proceed with caution before possibly picking up any of his future novels.
