Weird book. It's strangely super similar to Lucy Foley's THE HUNTING PARTY, which I read just a few months prior. Strong spoilers ahead:
Same premise of a group of friends who all meet in a secluded location, the popular/successful woman gets murdered, her red herring husband is cheating on her with her closest friend and he's lost a ton of money in devious schemes, but the real baddie is the friend who's been secretly obsessed with the victim for years. There's even a slight romantic entanglement of the victim with the grumpy loner who takes care of the secluded place.
It's bizarre and honestly took some of my enjoyment away from reading this. However, the book was well-written and decently engaging. The plot was not super enjoyable and it didn't help that all the characters were rather profoundly unlikable or boring. I get that it's popular now to have your entire cast of characters being awful people, but it can backfire when you don't end up caring or connecting enough to them. The narrative voice was not particularly enjoyable and the constant gassing up what was going to happen got old pretty fast.
I also thought this was strangely predictable despite all the twists and turns of the plot. It seemed clear from like the first 50-60 pages that the narrator was our true villain. All in all, not a great book for me.

I found this one a little hard to follow in comparison to the Silent Patient. However I still found it to be an interesting and thought provoking read. I’m a sucker for an unreliable narrator.
